WORKSHOP SUMMER 2013

Date: Late June - early July 2013
5-Day Dry Stone Workshop
Maximum 8 -10 participants
Please
be in touch if you are interested a dry stone workshop in the majestic fjord and high mountain region of
Norway. Currently in the planning stages, we are taking names of anyone
interested, with a deposit required by May 1, 2013. Registration, details and prices will be available October 2012.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This course in dry stone construction will teach basic building skills as applied to both traditional walls and environmental art making. Take delight in nature by reaching into a landscape and making a physical bond with one isolated location. The spectacular glacial landscape of Norway offers an exceptional variety of scenery ranging from blue glacier arms and towering mountains to fertile valleys and deep lakes.
In this 5-day hands-on course participants will learn how to create a freestanding wall and environmental art features. Instruction will be offered on the subjects of history, design, tools and techniques of dry stone construction. The workshop includes sketching three-dimensionally on site, making and setting up wall profile guides and sorting stone according to "best use."
Workshop activities will also include a study of local, historic stone walls- origin, content, form and current condition.
Applied principles of dry stone construction will be taught, and discussed in relation to their value in the creation of environmental art. During informal evening gatherings there will be short programs offered on the subjects of traditional walling and environmental art.
The wall building workshop will lead into an exploration of the surrounding landscape. Investigations of local cultural patterns on the land, wildlife habitats and daily/seasonal environmental cycles arouse curiosity about a place and invite deeper study into their order and pattern. Participants will be encouraged to translate their perceptions into artistic expressions through the medium of stone.
Methods for the safe shifting and lifting of stone will also be taught. Recognizing and honoring personal and material limitations will be emphasized. By working collaboratively with fellow participants and the environment, individual ability and confidence in handcrafting with stone will be gained.
